Scholarship

Has anyone given any thought to raising money for college-bound students? At the given moment there are 30 people registered to attend. If we all chipped in $20 we could create a $500 scholarship.
I know we're all excited about seeing everyone again, but I feel it’s a bit of our responsibility to also give back to the school that united us.

We also dont have to make it a requirement to give, but rather we have a goal, and everyone chips in what they can.

Adam,

I think the idea is definitely worth exploring.  We could also collect money and gift it on behalf of the class (a Class of 2000 Gift) to a particular school program or to be used in a certain way, which we could vote for at the reunion.  Since we're only about two months out now, this might be a little easier than setting up a scholarship fund and figuring out how we want to determine the winner.  I think it's really important that we figure out a way to give back though, and, like you said, small donations from many people add up quickly.

We'll start gearing up again once August roles around, and we certainly need people to lead these types of initiatives.  If you are interested, please let John or me know.

Thanks,

Garrett

 Garrett,

Yes, I would be interested initiating or aiding in this process. I agree with the notion of gifting this year rather than creating a scholarship committee.

I also suggest that whatever the outcome may be, that it not be a decadal but annual. I previously mentioned a scholarship for college-bound students; however, there are more opportunities for assistance. Students need glasses, coats, back-packs, or even a yearbook purchase. Not everyone is college-bound, (cough, cough) Bill Gates.

There might be some non-profits that would be willing to manage transactions and services, relinquishing any financial responsibilities from us.

I agree when August rolls around we’ll get more into detail. I just wanted to reply and record some final thoughts I had on the matter in this forum.

Thanks,
Adam
